All About YouTube

According to YouTube.com, "Launched in May 2005, YouTube allows billions of people to discover, watch and share originally-created videos. YouTube provides a forum for people to connect, inform, and inspire others across the globe and acts as a distribution platform for original content creators and advertisers large and small."

Your instructor may utilize YouTube in a number of ways:
  1. Your instructor may assign a video for your class to watch and react to in a written assignment or discussion board.
  2. You may be asked to upload a video of yourself performing a task or presenting on a topic.
  3. You may be required to locate and share a video in a discussion board.
  4. YouTube may be used as a resource for supplemental information on a topic.

How to Search YouTube

1. In the search field, begin typing the subject for which you are searching. Relevant results will begin to appear below. When you see the topic you are looking for, you may click on it. If your topic does not automatically show up, hit the enter key on your keyboard to begin your search.

2. If the topic you have searched for is very popular, you will receive a large number of results. By default, the videos will be sorted based of relevancy. This means that the videos that are chosen to be watched the most by people who searched for the same topic are closer to the top of the list. As you can see, American Revolution Documentary has over 1.5 million videos associated with it. In a case such as this, you may want to try searching for a specific documentary, rather than using a general search.

3. You can also narrow down your results using filters such as when the video was uploaded and the duration of the video.
